Banned: The World’s Most Dangerous Diet Trends - Part 2

Just when you thought the diet craziness came to a crescendo in the 1970s, the next few decades continued the ridiculous trends.

Check this out:

If the 70s were all about liquid protein, the next two decades seemed to be about completely escaping reality.

The 1980s and 90s were a wild ride filled with neon fitness tapes and those so-called "miracle" pills.

You didn't miss part 1 did you?

The "Sleeping Beauty" Diet

Ever hear of this one?

In the 80s, one trend took the idea of "beauty sleep" to a whole new level. Enter the Sleeping Beauty Diet. The concept was pretty straightforward: if you’re knocked out, you can’t eat.

Followers would take heavy sedatives to sleep for days on end, and there were even whispers of celebrities giving it a go. It wasn’t just lazy; it was downright dangerous.

Overdosing on sedatives can lead to respiratory failure, and let’s be real—your body needs real nutrients to function, not just a long nap.

The Fen-Phen Frenzy

By the early 90s, everyone was on the hunt for a magic pill, and Fen-Phen seemed to fit the bill. This combo of two drugs promised to suppress appetite and give you a boost of energy.

Millions of prescriptions flew off the shelves, and it felt like the ultimate weight loss solution. But the fairy tale ended in 1997 when reports surfaced of users suffering serious heart valve damage.

The FDA quickly yanked it from the market, serving as a huge warning about the dangers of "quick fix" medications.

The "Olestra" Era: A Messy Mistake

You can’t talk about the 90s without mentioning Olestra, the fat substitute that made its way into "light" potato chips. It had zero calories because your body couldn’t digest it.

The catch?

It zipped right through your system, leading to those infamous warning labels about "abdominal cramping" and "loose stools." Not exactly a glamorous way to shed pounds!

Most folks decided that the calories were worth it to avoid those unpleasant side effects.

Pro-Tip: If a food product comes with a warning label that sounds like it belongs on your laundry, it’s probably not what you’d call "health food."

Consult the Experts

The 80s and 90s taught us that shortcuts often come with a hefty price tag. Whether it’s snoozing through life or popping unverified pills, the risks are all too real. True health isn’t found in a sedative or a flashy chip; it’s about building sustainable habits.

One Last Note

Before you dive into any type of questionable diet plan or meal options, make sure you get sound advice from a trained an licensed medical professional. Remember "if it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't true".

Have you ever heard of these scams before?

And most importantly, are you ready for next chapter in this series?

  1. Oh yeah! I remember Phen-fen, that stuff was deadly! Anybody else remember when Burger King cooked their French fries in Olestra? Glad I never ate them! 🤮

I think I do remember when BK was using Olestra to fry the French fries. Good thing they dropped that choice like a bad habit. Not familiar with that "Sleeping Beauty Diet" though. That's another strange one.

  3. You know I could have sworn I saw some recent ads on that sleeping beauty diet plan. I hope people aren't using tranquilizers to try losing weight...🤨
