Benefits Of Basil
Sure, you might think of basil as that delicious herb that takes your pasta and salads up a notch.
But basil does a lot more than just make your food taste great – it's packed with health benefits, some of which might surprise you!
Acne and Clear Skin
For anyone who’s dealt with acne, here’s something cool: basil has natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help keep your skin clear.
In fact, research shows that African wild basil oil can reduce acne lesions even more effectively than traditional treatments like benzoyl peroxide.
So, whether you use it as an essential oil or in skincare products, basil can be a secret weapon against acne.
Stress Relief and Mood Boost
Feeling frazzled? Basil has long been known as a natural mood booster. In ancient practices, people would chew a few basil leaves twice a day to help calm their minds and relieve stress.
You can try it too, either by sipping basil tea or using it as an aromatherapy oil. Some even call basil an “adaptogen,” which means it can help the body adapt to stress by balancing the immune system and giving you a little extra resilience.
A Natural Antibacterial Powerhouse
Basil’s volatile oils – compounds like cineole, eugenol, and limonene – are not just fancy-sounding names. These oils are powerful antibacterials that can help fight bacteria like Staphylococcus and E. coli.
Studies even suggest that basil oils can stop the growth of bacteria resistant to regular antibiotics. So, sprinkling fresh basil into your dishes just before serving isn’t only delicious; it may also help keep harmful bacteria at bay.
Loaded with Antioxidants
Basil is rich in vitamins K, A, and C, along with powerful phytonutrients that help protect our cells from damage.
Two of these compounds, orientin and vicenin, are especially effective at protecting white blood cells from oxidation and even from radiation exposure.
Whether you’re getting a little too much sun or undergoing medical treatments, basil’s antioxidants offer some protective benefits.
Natural Inflammation Fighter
If you deal with arthritis or other inflammatory conditions, basil might help. The eugenol in basil can block the enzyme that causes inflammation – similar to the effect of common anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. Adding basil to your diet may be a simple, natural way to support joint health and reduce inflammation.
Digestive Aid
While the evidence is mixed, many people find that basil tea can soothe an upset stomach or relieve indigestion. Folk remedies suggest that basil has antispasmodic effects, meaning it can help with muscle cramps in the digestive system. Just remember to check with a healthcare provider, especially if you're pregnant, before using basil this way.
Heart Health Support
Basil’s nutrient profile offers some great heart health benefits too. Just two teaspoons of fresh basil provides a good dose of vitamin K, which supports blood clotting and helps prevent calcium buildup in the arteries.
Basil also contains carotenoids that help protect blood vessels from oxidative damage and magnesium, which can relax blood vessels, supporting healthy blood pressure.
Basil is more than just a delicious kitchen staple – it's practically a wellness secret! Whether you're sprinkling it on your pasta, brewing it into tea, or using it in a skin treatment, basil offers a world of benefits that can help you feel great from the inside out.

"Your Health Is Your Wealth!!
Yup, basil's alright in my book, but how about a little something on garlic or kale, they both have some amazing benefits as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting ApolloGr3ed! I really appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Basil is awesome as an herb and as you can see from the infographic, it helps you in numerous ways. Garlic and kale are also high on the list of foods that have great benefits and are versatile for cooking.
I have actually written some material on these foods in previous article (check out our archives), This, of course does not mean that additional info cannot be written about these wonderful foods and we may actually have to explore this possibility in the future.

I finally figured it out!! On your "about" page you mentioned a favorite song from the 90's in the line "a man has blog, hey man, don't slog" (weird line, but close enough). My brother is a huge fan of 1990's alternative music and he automatically recognized the line. Then he let me hear the song (which I have fallen in love with and am downloading from iTunes tonight). Tell me if I'm right about this! Is it "Hey, Man Nice Shot" by Filter?
ReplyDeleteThank you for responding to my question, Kurt! You guys are my favorite blog team! I look forward to seeing what you and your team will presenting us with in the near future.
ReplyDeleteYou got me dead to rights on the song I referenced in my about page (sorry about the awkward slogan, I NEVER was good at rhyming...). It is "Hey Man, Nice Shot" by Filter. For your participation 2much2much, I'll be sending you a special gift via e-mail. Thanks for commenting!
ReplyDeleteNo problem, ApolloGr3ed! I appreciate you taking the time to post a comment. We hope to keep you and all our readers interested for a long time to come!
ReplyDeleteHere I thought my wife always used too much basil in her cooking. Looks like we'll be heading to the farmers market for a few bushels...
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting, Nathan!
ReplyDeleteBasil absolutely rocks! I know what you mean about getting too much of it. Just tell your wife "all things in moderation, dear"....Have a great weekend!
